Palm oil can be found in a variety pf products like soaps, cosmetics and biscuits. It is an important commodity in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia. Back in 2018, Malaysia produced over 19.5 million tonnes of crude oil palm from a planted area of 5.8 million hectares. The total export of palm oil and palm-based products was 25.2 million tonnes, which generated export earnings of RM 67.5 billion. But palm oil has encountered a lot of negative headwinds regarding how its farming practices have resulted in deforestation.

The Edge Malaysia - How Malaysian Companies See Business in 2020 (16 December 2019)
Despite external headwinds, Malaysian companies are not as gloomy about their business prospects next year as one might expect. HSBC's latest global survey, "Navigator: Now,next and how for business", which gauges business sentiment and expectations of trade activity and business growth of 9,131 companies in 35 markets - including 202 firms in Malaysia - indicates that Malaysian businesses are optimistic about the outlook for the year ahead. In fact, 81% of businesses forecast sales growth next year, largely through improved productivity and entry into new markets. Nevertheless, confidence is not unanimous across Malaysian firms, with almost 31% of companies more pessimistic about growth than a year ago - considerably more downbeat than the global average (18%). Read on for other interesting results from the survey, which was conducted between August and September this year.

Our shift to an economy based on high productivity and knowledge creation has resulted in shortages in the labour market. Since 2015, the government has come up with an annual critical occupations list (COL), which basically registers jobs that employers want to fill but have difficulty filling. These are jobs that are middle or high-skilled, sought-after and strategic. The COL is designed to be a tool to help policymakers make decisions, including on education and training programmes, says the World Bank, in its report "Monitoring occupational shortages - Lessons from Malaysia's critical occupations list". Here is the 2018/19 list, which comprises 59 jobs, ranging from managing directors and CEOs to mechanical engineers, software developers and lorry drivers.
